Bromelain is a potent natural anti-inflammatory which is usually derived from the stems of pineapples but which consists chiefly of protein-digesting enzymes (proteases). Considered by the National Institutes of Health to be effective for osteoarthritis. It is felt possibly effective for post-exercise muscle soreness, but is widely used for burns, systemic symptoms of cancer, cardiovascular disease, inadequate protein digestion, prostatitis, recovery from surgery, respiratory infections producing excessive mucus, thrombophlebitis and varicose veins. It is best taken as tablets or capsules between meals to improve absorption, and should not be combined with anticoagulants because it has mild blood-thinning effects
