It contains vitamins A, B1, B2, C, and E. As with most red algae it contains high levels of iodine. Clinical studies have shown that Irish moss can be used to safely and effectively treat respiratory allergies like asthma and hay fever, as well it is very effective at treating digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and chronic constipation. It is also used for cystic fibrosis because it breaks up mucus in the lungs and loosens phlegm in the digestive system. Irish moss is also effective for heavy metal toxicity, allergies, and infections like bronchitis, asthma, and urinary tract infections (UTI). Irish moss is also used in the treatment of colds and flu, cystic fibrosis, irritable bowel syndrome, digestive problems like constipation and indigestion, bladder infections and vaginal infections, and as a hemostatic (a substance that helps stop bleeding.)
